ASSEN, Valentino Rossi meraih pole position di Assen, Belanda, setelah mencatat waktu terbaik pada babak kualifikasi, Jumat (26/6). “The Doctor” mengungguli dua rival terberatnya, Jorge Lorenzo dan Casey Stoner, yang justru berada di posisi tiga dan empat.
Kejutan justru dibuat pebalap Repsol Honda, Dani Pedrosa. Meskipun belum berada dalam kondisi terbaik karena cedera pada pergelangan tangan–bahkan saat balapan di Barcelona dua pekan lalu dia ikut balapan setelah mendapat suntikan pemati rasa–, Pedrosa bisa mengalahkan Lorenzo dan Stoner sehingga dia akan start dari posisi dua saat balapan hari Sabtu (27/6).
Rossi yang sepanjang sesi latihan 1 dan 2 tidak pernah berada di posisi pertama, mencatat waktu 1 menit 36,025 detik. Dia unggul 0,085 detik dari Pedrosa.
Sementara itu rekan setim Rossi di Fiat Yamaha, Lorenzo, yang mencatat waktu 1 menit 36,393 detik akan start dari posisi tiga. Dia dibuntuti oleh pebalap Ducati, Stoner.
Hasil kurang memuaskan diraih Randy de Puniet karena pebalap Perancis dari tim LCR Honda ini hanya berada di posisi 10. Padahal pada latihan bebas 1, dia membuat kejutan karena berada di urutan teratas, mengalahkan catatan waktu “the big three” (Rossi, Lorenzo dan Stoner).
Balapan di Assen ini sangat krusial bagi tiga pebalap teratas yang menguasai klasemen sementara. Pasalnya, mereka sama-sama mengumpulkan 106 poin, sehingga hasil di Assen akan menjadi penentu siapa yang menjadi penguasa tunggal.
Sedangkan bagi Rossi, posisi pole akan membuka jalannya menuju kemenangan ke-100 di MotoGP. Setelah menang dalam pertarungan dramatis melawan Lorenzo di Barcelona, Rossi hanya perlu satu kemenangan lagi untuk mencetak rekor tersebut yang sempat tertunda karena gagal di GP Italia.

Dalam balapan seri keenam ini, duo pebalap Yamaha-Factory menyuguhkan tontonan menarik melalui persaingan mereka. Casey Stoner yang coba menekan dari posisi ketiga saat start tidak berhasil mendekatinya.

Di sini Rossi menunjukkan kelasnya. Dengan melakukan pengereman jarak dekat, ia berhasil memperdayakan Stoner. Bahkan menyalip rekannya di lap ke-3 untuk memimpin lomba.

Namun pada lap ke-10 giliran Lorenzo yang mengambil alih pimpinan balapan. Tak pelak, sekitar 80 ribu penonton bersorak-sorai memberi dukungan kepada local hero, Lorenzo.

Sementara Rossi terus menempel dengan sabar. Malah sesekali ia coba menyejajarkan dengan Lorenzo sebelum masuk tikungan pertama. Terkadang ia coba memancing rekannya itu dengan melaskukan menuver dari sisi dalam sebelum masuk tikungan, namun Lorenzo tidak terpancing.

Adegan salip-menyalip kedua pebalap Yamaha ini dipertontonkan jelang dua lap terakhir. Sekali lagi, Rossi yang memiliki mental juara dan kaya pengalaman, akhirnya berhasil melesat duluan ke luar tikungan terakhir.

Balapan yang menempuh 25 lap berlangsung cukup seru. Circuit de Catalunya yang berkarakter cepat mampu membakar emosi pebalap untuk menggenjot tenaga motor secara maksimal.

Di trek yang panjang 4 km lebih ini, Yuki Takahashi tergelincir dari motornya di lap ke-3. Pebalap tim Honda Scot ini tak bisa melanjutkan balapan.

Nasib sial juga dialami Toni Elias. Pebalap tim Honda Gresini ini terlempar dari motornya akibat menikung terlalu miring. Kejadiannya berlangsung di lap 10.
